Research to understand parents' attitudes towards counterfeits and the resulting consequences for businesses.

Who's this research for?

We know that Amazon is deeply affected by fakes. To explore the effects of this, we spoke to parents in the U.S. about their experiences shopping online and found the following:

Parents trust companies to sell responsibly and control their sales platforms. With the threat of fakes within the toy industry, could parents' confidence in brands suffer?

This research is aimed at businesses within the toy and baby product industry, seeking to understand the relationships between parents, online shopping platforms and counterfeits, especially the risks, level of awareness and attitudes of parents with regards to shopping online.

  • Amazon is hugely popular with parents, more than almost every other form of shopping (83% of parents buy in Amazon)
  • 74% of those that had encountered fake products bought them online (unaware they were buying fakes)
  • Most parents are not good at spotting a fake product (only 39% of parents can identify fakes)
  • Companies are losing sales to fakes as parents cannot tell the difference between a real and counterfeit products.
  • Brand reputation is seriously harmed by fakes in the market.
